Quick painting of one of my favourite cinematic characters.
Dr Herbert West from the Re-Animator series of horror movies (based on a H P Lovecraft short story).
He's played by Jeffrey Combs, who is one of my favourite actors. He's unconventional for Hollywood. He isn't over 6ft, isn't blue-eyed or buff. He has these big, brown puppy-dog eyes with girlish lashes, feminine lips, a pointy button nose and round head. Yet the sheer range of subtle characterisations that come from this man... he can make those big ol' puppy dog eyes flash with fierce intelligence and indignation as the arrogant Dr West, or show such kindness and patience as Commander Shran on Enterprise.
I absolutely love acting, and while all the bullshit surrounding it as a career choice scares me, it's actors like Combs, who are powerhouses of characterisation, who carve out careers playing unique and unforgettable characters, who inspire me to keep performing for the love of it.
Thank you to these people for use of their super lovely stock:
I am always happily surprised to see him in things I wasn't expecting. Or to hear him. I remember when I realized he was voicing The Question on Justice League Unlimited. Such an amazing job. Doug Jones has this effect on me too but for slightly different reasons.
I frigging LOVE how he voiced The Scarecrow in B:TAS. I thought it was a fantastic choice. In Batman: Arkham Asylum, they have a reference to a Dr Combs in one of the patient tapes.
Doug Jones is fantastic, too.
I really, really love my B-movie actors. I find them infinitely more entertaining than the Hollywood heavy hitters.

He definitely was a better choice and Scarecrow had a better redesign compared to everyone else in that era of the show (Joker's redesign still baffles me).
Ah yes Commander Shren et al, I do like Jefferey's work, I first saw him in the Frighteners and thought he was just birlliant, though I've yet to see the Re-Animator series...
Oh, if you like him, you'll love Herbert West. I totally recommend it. It's a bit gruesome, but... old school gruesome (fun, not sickening). Re-Animator is very funny too.
